As an input into the BBC ‘Future of News’ initiative, we identified high level, strategic operating model options for the way BBC News could be organised over the next 3-5 years.
In recent years, the introduction of new devices, platforms, social media, new entrants, changes in demographics and also in audience expectations have led to fundamental changes in the way that news is gathered, produced, distributed and consumed. BBC News must now decide what type of organisation it must become to compete in an increasingly crowded and fragmented market-place.
This was an opportunity to stand back and explore the 'art of the possible' in terms of delivery models, opportunities to maximise digital ways of working. We identified three alternative organising principles which could be used as the basis for the design of the future operating model for BBC News. By the end of the process clear consensus was reached around the preferred model. This view represented a significant departure from where BBC News is today and a significant advancement in the ‘Future of News’ initiative.
